Gods of the Bible

Graham Hancock sits down with Mauro Biglino, an Italian who translated 70 books of the Old Testament for a Catholic publisher. Biglino says the Hebrew text never speaks of one almighty God. He reads Elohim as a group of powerful beings and Yahweh as one of them, in charge of the family of Jacob. He treats the Ark of the Covenant, the kavod and the ruach as objects that read like technology. Hancock ties this to his idea of a lost Ice Age civilization and to the flood stories. He also tells how the Ethiopian claim to hold the Ark pulled him out of journalism and into the ancient past. Both men say the text should not be treated as dogma. Biglino sticks to the literal Hebrew and says he does not guess where the Elohim came from.

Key points

  • Biglino says El, Elohim and Eloah do not mean “God”, and that nobody knows what the name YHWH first meant.
  • He reads the Elohim as a more advanced civilization that split the peoples of the earth into groups, with Yahweh given the sons of Israel.
  • He says Chemosh of Moab and Dagon are named in the Bible as Elohim for other peoples.
  • He argues the idea of one God grew during the exile in Babylon, and that earlier the Bible shows people serving one Elohim among many.
  • He reads the Ark, the kavod and the ruach as technology, and calls the Shamir too unclear to explain.
  • Hancock links the Elohim to a lost Ice Age civilization, a flood around 11,600 years ago, and a secret society that carried old knowledge forward.
  • Biglino says beings like the Elohim appear in other cultures as the Anunna, the Deva, the Neteru and the Aesir.
