Mu is a modern esoteric lost continent. In this tradition it is a motherland that sank in catastrophe and left refugees, symbols, and memory across the oceans.
What was the Lost Continent of Mu? The short answer depends on which map you open. Augustus Le Plongeon placed Mu in the Atlantic and linked it to Plato’s Atlantis. James Churchward relocated Mu to the Pacific as a vast Naacal motherland.
I treat both as labeled trails in lost-continent geography. Same name. Two oceans. Always say which author.
I start with Le Plongeon because he named Mu and tied it to the Atlantic story. Then I open Churchward’s Pacific map, tablets, and scale. Then I set Mu beside Atlantis and Lemuria so the three names do not collapse into one.
Le Plongeon’s Mu (Atlantic)
Augustus Le Plongeon, working with Alice Dixon Le Plongeon, excavated in Yucatán and built a diffusionist Maya-Egypt trail. He kept the name Mu for a land destroyed by catastrophe and identified that land with Atlantis in the Atlantic.
The name trail begins earlier. Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg, in 1864, misread the Troano Codex (Madrid Codex) with the de Landa alphabet and took a glyph sequence as “Mu,” a land destroyed by catastrophe. Later Mayanists read that codex as calendrical and astronomical material. Le Plongeon kept the name and the Atlantic placement.
In Queen Móo and the Egyptian Sphinx (1896), Le Plongeon writes the Atlantic Mu into the same catastrophe story Plato records:
In our journey westward across the Atlantic we shall pass in sight of that spot where once existed the pride and life of the ocean, the Land of Mu, which, at the epoch that we have been considering, had not yet been visited by the wrath of Human, that lord of volcanic fires to whose fury it afterward fell a victim. The description of that land given to Solon by Sonchis, priest at Sais; its destruction by earthquakes, and submergence, recorded by Plato in his Timaeus, have been told and retold so many times that it is useless to encumber these pages with a repetition of it.
Meaning: for Le Plongeon, Mu is the Atlantic land Plato describes. Sonchis at Sais, earthquakes, and submergence sit on the same trail as Timaeus.
Le Plongeon also proposed Lemuria or Mu vanishing at the dawn of human history. He placed Mu in the Atlantic. Refugees, in his reading, founded Egypt and Mesoamerica.
His Maya court narrative names Chaacmol (Coh), Aac, and Queen Moo from Chichen Itza and Uxmal iconography. He held that Queen Moo fled after conflict, sought the Land of Mu, found it gone, and reached Egypt. In that reading Egypt’s founding is tied to Queen Moo as a Mu refugee, with other refugees reaching Maya Central America. Isis and Osiris sit as parallels in his frame.
That is Le Plongeon’s Mu: Atlantic, Atlantis-linked, Queen Moo as refugee founder.
Churchward’s Mu (Pacific)
James Churchward (1851-1936) popularized Mu as a Pacific motherland. His series begins with Lost Continent of Mu, the Motherland of Man (1926), reissued as The Lost Continent of Mu (1931).
Churchward’s map spans the Pacific: Hawaiian Islands to Fiji; Easter Island to the Marianas. He also frames it east-west from the Marianas to Easter Island, and north-south from Hawaii to Mangaia. Rough size in his framing is about 5,000 miles (8046 kilometers) east-west and over 3,000 north-south, larger than South America.
On his tablet discovery claim, Churchward recounted discovering ancient clay tablets in India, written in a mysterious “Naga-Maya language.” Those tablets, he claimed, originated from Mu.
That is his Naacal (Naga-Maya) tablet source layer. In The Lost Continent of Mu (1931) he also frames science in the book on a second set: about 2,500 stone tablets associated with William Niven in Mexico. He claimed man first appeared in Mu.
On civilization scale and destruction, Churchward described Mu as an advanced civilization, led by a superior “white race.” A home to 64 million people before its destruction around 12,000 years ago. He attributed its demise to catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, leading to its submersion under the Pacific.
That is his scale and destruction date. Motherland, Garden of Eden, and birthplace of civilization sit in the same series.
He linked Mu’s influence to Egypt, Greece, and Central America: megalithic architecture, sun symbols, and sun worship. He held that Polynesian megalithic art came from Mu. His Easter Island moai material and origin claims were later corrected; I keep his claim as his claim and note that later correction without dropping the wider Pacific trail.
Sacred Symbols of Mu (1933) traces world religions to Mu and holds that Mu’s teachings influenced Moses and Jesus. That book soft-links the sacred-symbol and sun-worship neighbors on this site.
Churchward’s five Mu titles, as this trail uses them:
- The Lost Continent of Mu – motherland, Garden of Eden, birth of civilization
- The Children of Mu – inhabitants as influential, utopian, advanced
- The Sacred Symbols of Mu – religions and symbols from Mu; Moses and Jesus claim
- The Cosmic Forces of Mu – challenges evolution and atomic orthodoxy in his framing
- Second Book of the Cosmic Forces of Mu – further revisionist Earth history
Mu vs Atlantis vs Lemuria
Searchers often collapse these three names. I keep them separate by map and author.
| Name | Usual map in this trail | Key authors on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantis | Atlantic (Plato Critias / Timaeus) | Plato; Donnelly; Scott-Elliot |
| Mu (Le Plongeon) | Atlantic; often equated with Atlantis | Le Plongeon; Brasseur name trail |
| Mu (Churchward) | Pacific motherland | Churchward Naacal series |
| Lemuria | Indian / Pacific (Theosophy; biological land-bridge origin of the name) | Scott-Elliot Lost Lemuria; Blavatsky root races |
Le Plongeon’s Mu is the Atlantic twin of Plato’s Atlantis. Churchward’s Mu is a Pacific motherland, a parallel lost-continent sister to Atlantis. Lemuria is mainly the Theosophical and root-race Pacific-Indian trail, including William Scott-Elliot’s Lost Lemuria, and it sometimes overlaps Mu in popular speech.
The Atlantic catastrophe neighbor is the destruction of Atlantis described in the deluge legends. The Lemuria / third-root-race neighbor is the third root race Lemurians. Scott-Elliot’s Theosophical Atlantis and Lemuria trail sits on William Scott-Elliot.
How I use this in my research
I use Mu as lost-continent geography beside Plato’s Atlantis and Theosophical Lemuria. Same research lane: catastrophe memory, refugee founders, and global diffusion of symbols.
Churchward’s overnight destruction by earthquake and volcano sits beside Le Plongeon’s volcanic Human and Plato’s submergence. That is the deluge twin trail I already work on the Atlantis destruction page.
Churchward’s sacred symbols and sun worship as Mu-to-world diffusion claims sit beside my pages on Atlantis symbols and solar cult. The four-armed cross neighbor is the sacred symbol of Atlantis, the four-armed cross.
The Atlantic dynasty trail stays on 12 kings of Atlantis. Mu is the Pacific sister map I set beside that house.
I give Le Plongeon’s Atlantic Mu and Churchward’s Pacific numbers real weight. 64 million people, about 12,000 years ago, Naacal tablets, Queen Moo as refugee: those are the Mu tradition this site works with. I read that tradition as open lost-continent and paleo-contact geography, not as a name to apologize for.
FAQ
What was the Lost Continent of Mu?
Mu is a modern esoteric lost land. In Le Plongeon it is an Atlantic Atlantis-twin destroyed by catastrophe. In Churchward it is a Pacific Naacal motherland of about 64 million people, submerged around 12,000 years ago.
Is Mu the same as Atlantis?
Plato’s Atlantis is Atlantic. Le Plongeon equated Mu with that Atlantic land. Churchward moved Mu to the Pacific as a separate motherland. Same catastrophe family of stories; not always the same map.
Is Mu the same as Lemuria?
Popular speech overlaps the names. Lemuria is mainly Theosophical and Scott-Elliot root-race geography in the Indian and Pacific lanes. Churchward’s Mu is his Pacific tablet tradition. I keep the authors labeled.
Where did Le Plongeon and Churchward place Mu?
Le Plongeon: Atlantic, linked to Plato’s Atlantis and Queen Moo’s refugee trail. Churchward: Pacific, from Hawaii-Mangaia and Marianas-Easter spans, with Naga-Maya tablets as his source claim.
How does Mu help Atlantis research?
It supplies a parallel catastrophe and diffusion trail beside Plato’s Atlantic story: deluge memory, sacred symbols, sun worship, and refugee founders. I use Le Plongeon for the Atlantic bridge and Churchward for the Pacific motherland scale.
