Whales stand out for several reasons. They are studied in marine biology, in conservation and even in cultural studies.

Atlantean’s whales and dolphins

Some whales are among the largest animals that ever lived on Earth. The blue whale is the largest animal known. It reaches up to 100 feet (30 meters) in length. It weighs about 200 tons.

Some species, like the sperm whale, dive deeper than 2,000 meters (6,600 feet). They hunt prey such as giant squid. These dives can last more than an hour.

Whales are known for their long migrations. Some species travel thousands of miles between feeding and breeding grounds. These journeys show their skill at navigation. They also show how well whales adapt to different parts of the ocean.

Many whale species have complex social lives. They form lasting bonds within their pods. They communicate with many kinds of sound, including songs, clicks and whistles. Some of these sounds carry over great distances underwater.

Whales show signs of high intelligence. They can solve problems. They show self-awareness. They learn behaviors and teach them within their groups. Their brain-to-body ratio is also high for an animal. A high ratio is often linked to intelligence.

Whales play a key role in the ocean’s ecosystems. Their feeding keeps the numbers of small fish and plankton in check. Their excrement supplies nutrients that support marine life. When whales die, their bodies sink to the ocean floor. There they feed whole communities of deep-sea creatures.

Many indigenous peoples have relied on whales for their culture and economy for thousands of years. Today whales are also a symbol of global conservation. They draw attention to how whaling, pollution and climate change affect marine life.

Whales calm the Earth

The song of the whales calms the Earth in its sickness, and soothes it so that this sickness is bearable. If the sickness became unbearable and overwhelmed the Earth, the tilt of its axis would become unstable. If that happened, the Earth would not be able to sustain its orbit. It would move rapidly towards the sun, or out into the far reaches of space. In either case, life on Earth would cease.

Prehistoric Whale found in the Peruvian desert

Scientists have found the fossil remains of a prehistoric whale in a Peruvian desert. It is named Perucetus colossus. It may have been the heaviest animal ever, heavier even than the blue whale. The find challenges existing records. The skeleton is estimated to be two to three times heavier than that of a blue whale. A blue whale can weigh up to 165 tons.

The study was published in Nature on August 2, 2023. It followed a ten-year excavation. Paleontologists Mario Urbina and Rodolfo Salas-Gismondi were among its leaders. The team dug up 13 vertebrae, four ribs and part of a hip.

The vertebrae are very dense and large. This suggests the whale lived in shallow coastal waters. Heavy bones would offset the lift of its blubber and air-filled lungs. In effect, the bones worked as ballast.

The bones of Perucetus colossus are nearly 40 million years old. They come from shortly before toothed whales and baleen whales split apart. The skeleton is incomplete, so the animal’s diet and way of life are still a guess. Scientists suggest it may have been a carnivore like other cetaceans. It may also have been a large scavenger, or even a plant eater like the manatee.

Research continues. The skeleton will be shown at the Natural History Museum in Lima, Peru. The find helps explain how whales evolved. It also shows how varied marine life was in prehistoric times.
