Red Sea: The Crossing, the Name and the Shores

The Red Sea is best known for one crossing, but on this site it carries much more than the Exodus. It is the place Lilith flew to, the water some writers say was parted by wind or by knowledge rather than by a miracle, a sea whose name Velikovsky could not explain by its color, and a strait in the Oera Linda Book. I put the passages together here.

The crossing

On Exodus the chapter summaries follow the story from the plagues to the crossing, and YHWH might be a later insertion replacing Elohim reads chapter 14 as a warrior God triumphing, with YHWH drowning the Egyptians. The Oahspe tells it more simply on History of Capilya, Moses, and Chine: Pharaoh pursued with chariots, but Jehovih parted the Red Sea with wind, and the Israelites crossed on dry land. What Is Mount Zaphon? notes that Exodus 14:2 and 14:9 name Baal-zephon as a cult place on the route.

The old poetry of the crossing survives in a lost book. The Book of the Wars of the Lord starts from the one verse that quotes it:

Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

Numbers 21:14 (KJV)
Numbers 21:14 (KJV)

The same page warns that the KJV reading “What he did in the Red sea” is a guess at a difficult Hebrew line.

Miracle or knowledge?

Several sources do not accept a sudden miracle. In the video Atlantean Civilization in Tibet, Rudolf Steiner explains the parting as the result of Moses’ training in the Egyptian mysteries, where he learned both spiritual and natural sciences. On Moses the Hebrews cross by collective faith and energy, walking without wetting their feet, in line with natural laws. Cherubim, a mechanical security device gives a midrash in which God took a cherub from the wheels of His throne and flew to the sea when Pharaoh gave chase.

On The Ark of the Covenant, Dolores Cannon asks Suddi, the Essene teacher of her regression sessions, whether the Ark helped the crossing:

The ark was not there. It was not made until… in the forty years of wandering.

A case for the Exodus between 6,000 and 4,200 BCE looks at the land itself and suggests that in wetter times parts of the Red Sea or nearby lakes may have been shallower or seasonally dry.

Other partings

Donnelly finds the same picture in America. On Genesis and Atlantis he notes that when the ancestors of the Quiches migrated, the Divinity parted the sea for their passage, “as the Red Sea was parted for the Israelites.”

Why red?

Immanuel Velikovsky asks the question on The Red World:

An old subject for debate is: Why is the Red Sea so named? If a sea is called Black or White, that may be due to the dark coloring of the water or to the brightness of the ice and snow. The Red Sea has a deep blue color.

He sets aside the old answers, coral and red birds, and says the water of the Sea of the Passage had a red tint, a name given by people who witnessed a cosmic upheaval.

Shores and canals

The sea also marks the edge of other stories. On Lilith she says the name of God, takes flight from the Garden of Eden and makes her new home on the Red Sea coast. Prophet Hud and the people of ’Âd places the people of ’Âd in southern Arabia, reaching to Yemen at the southern end of the Red Sea. Ancient Egypt – 11,800 BCE and Egyptian Kings of the Siriadic Land both credit Necho II with a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea. In the reading on The Oera Linda Book Reviewed, the sea-king of the Tyrians brings the Frisian ships through a strait that then ran into the Red Sea, which the text compares with the Suez Canal.
