The Qur’an and the Bible both tell of Nūḥ (Noah), a man who knew about a coming catastrophe while the people around him ignored him. Suppose the flood was caused by a celestial impact, by rapid sea-level rise, or by both. Then two questions come up. Did Nūḥ belong to a pre-flood civilization with advanced astronomical or environmental knowledge? And was that knowledge lost when his world was destroyed?

I look at this question from several sides on this page. I start with the flood myths, then the sky, then the Qur’an, and then what knowledge may have been lost.

Pre-Flood Civilizations and Advanced Knowledge

If Nūḥ lived during the late Pleistocene or early Holocene (~12,000 years ago), he might have belonged to one of the final societies before a major global flood event. The Pleistocene is the last ice age. The Holocene is the warmer period that came after it.

A. Evidence of Lost Civilizations Before the Flood

Several cultures have myths of an advanced civilization destroyed by a flood:

  • Sumerians (Ziusudra and Atrahasis): knowledge of the flood was given in advance.
  • Babylonians (Epic of Gilgamesh): Utnapishtim was warned and saved knowledge.
  • Hindus (Manu and Matsya): a pre-flood society was warned by a divine fish.
  • Greeks (Deucalion’s flood): a civilization was wiped out by the gods.

These myths repeat the same pattern. First, a select person is warned: Nūḥ, Ziusudra, Utnapishtim, Manu or Deucalion. Second, that person preserves knowledge or key elements of civilization. Third, the old world is destroyed, and the survivors restart human civilization.

So the question is this. Could Nūḥ have been part of a society with advanced astronomical, environmental or mathematical knowledge that a cataclysm wiped out?

Could Nūḥ’s People Have Tracked Celestial Events?

If the Taurid meteor stream caused the flood, then ancient astronomers might have tracked it for generations before the impact. I look at that idea in more detail on Could the Taurid meteor shower have caused the great flood?

The Sumerians, Egyptians and Indus Valley people all had early astronomical traditions. Göbekli Tepe (Turkey, ~9600 BCE) may contain carvings that show the Younger Dryas impact event. That event is linked to a Taurid meteor fragment striking Earth. I go into the carvings on An interpretation of Göbekli Tepe Pillar 43.

If Nūḥ’s people belonged to a similar culture, they may have understood the timing of cosmic disasters.

Two stars from Kimah

The Talmud connects the flood to the removal of two stars from Kimah, the Pleiades. I collect these passages on The Pleiades in the Talmud.

The Talmud says God took two stars from the Pleiades when He brought the flood.

When the Holy One, Blessed be He, sought to bring a flood into the world, He took two stars from Pleiades and brought the flood upon the world.

A second passage ties the flood to the rising of Kimah during the day.

Rabbi Yehoshua says God made Kima rise by day and removed two of its stars.

But because the people of the generation of the flood changed their actions for the worse, the Holy One, Blessed be He, changed for them the acts of Creation, and instead of Kima setting, He caused the constellation of Kima to rise during the day and He removed two stars from Kima, and in this way He brought a flood to the world.

It is possible that ancient sky-watchers saw two large comet fragments moving from that direction toward Earth. That would have given them a reason to predict an impact.

The Qur’anic Account: A Civilization That Rejected Knowledge

Surah Hud (11:36-39) describes how Nūḥ’s people mocked him when he warned them about the flood.

The Qur’an says the chiefs of Nūḥ’s people mocked him while he built the ship.

And he was building the ship, and every time that chieftains of his people passed him, they made mock of him. He said: Though ye make mock of Us, yet We mock at you even as ye mock;

This could mean that they dismissed both divine revelation and scientific observation. Suppose he belonged to a society that once tracked celestial cycles but had lost its respect for that knowledge. Then his warnings would have gone unheeded. My page on Prophet Nūḥ in the Qur’an follows his story through the other surahs.

This follows a pattern seen in other ancient flood myths:

  • Atlantis (Plato’s account): a great civilization that fell due to arrogance.
  • Mayan and Hopi traditions: previous worlds were destroyed when humans lost harmony with the cosmos. See Mayas and Hopi.
  • Sumerian king lists: kings ruled for thousands of years before the flood. This implies a great pre-flood civilization that was wiped out. See The Sumerian King List and Antediluvian rulers.

For Atlantis, Plato describes the moment the decline began.

Plato says the Atlanteans lost their divine nature and became full of greed for power.

By such reflections and by the continuance in them of a divine nature, the qualities which we have described grew and increased among them; but when the divine portion began to fade away, and became diluted too often and too much with the mortal admixture, and the human nature got the upper hand, they then, being unable to bear their fortune, behaved unseemly, and to him who had an eye to see grew visibly debased, for they were losing the fairest of their precious gifts; but to those who had no eye to see the true happiness, they appeared glorious and blessed at the very time when they were full of avarice and unrighteous power.

Could Nūḥ have been one of the last true astronomers, priests or sages of a declining civilization?

What Knowledge May Have Been Lost?

If Nūḥ inherited pre-flood wisdom, it might have included three kinds of knowledge.

A. Astronomy and Cosmic Cycles

  • Tracking celestial bodies and predicting long-term cycles.
  • Understanding the Taurid meteor stream and the risk of impacts.
  • Knowledge of cometary catastrophes that affected Earth’s climate.

B. Engineering and Construction

The Qur’an describes Nūḥ building a large structure, the Ark. He builds it with knowledge that could have been unique to his time.

The Qur’an says Nūḥ built the ship under God’s eyes and by His inspiration.

Build the ship under Our eyes and by Our inspiration, and speak not unto Me on behalf of those who do wrong. Lo! they will be drowned.

Qur'an 11:37, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall
Qur'an 11:37, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall

Pre-flood sites like Göbekli Tepe show signs of advanced construction techniques that suddenly disappeared after 9600 BCE.

C. Environmental Awareness

This would be the ability to read climate changes, tides and the natural signs of a coming flood. If rapid sea-level rise caused the flood, people near the coast would have seen gradual changes over generations.

Was the Flood the End of a Lost Civilization?

The Qur’an states that Nūḥ’s people perished completely. This suggests that his world was erased. In Surah Al-Ankabut (29:14-15), only Nūḥ and a few believers survived. Surah Hud (11:40) gives the few: “And but a few were they who believed with him.”

The Qur’an says the flood engulfed Nūḥ’s people, and only those with him in the ship were rescued.

And verily we sent Noah (as Our messenger) unto his folk, and he continued with them for a thousand years save fifty years; and the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers. And We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and made of it a portent for the peoples.

Qur'an 29:14-15, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall
Qur'an 29:14-15, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall

This matches flood myths where an entire civilization vanishes. If Nūḥ lived in a coastal or riverine civilization, then rapid sea-level rise or flooding after an impact could have wiped out everything.

These are possible real-world locations of such lost civilizations:

  1. Persian Gulf “Atlantis” (~8,000-12,000 years ago): a land, now under the sea, where early humans thrived.
  2. Sundaland (Indonesia, ~12,000 years ago): a massive landmass that was flooded at the end of the Ice Age.

Doggerland in the North Sea was a thriving Mesolithic region that the rising seas swallowed, with its final flooding c. 6200 BCE. Mesolithic means the Middle Stone Age.

If Nūḥ belonged to a scientifically or spiritually advanced society, its knowledge would have vanished with the flood. Only fragments would remain in oral traditions.

Final Thoughts: Was Nūḥ the Last Astronomer of a Lost World?

Yes, it is possible that Nūḥ was among the last inheritors of pre-flood knowledge. His warnings suggest awareness of long-term cosmic or environmental patterns. The Qur’anic flood account matches global myths of lost civilizations.

Early cultures could have tracked celestial events like Taurid meteor impacts, but this knowledge was lost. The flood may have wiped out an entire culture and reset civilization.

This leaves me with three deeper questions:

  • Did ancient humans once have an advanced form of astronomical and environmental knowledge?
  • Did the survivors, like Nūḥ, pass down remnants of this knowledge, which became myth over time?
  • Is there physical evidence of a lost civilization destroyed by a celestial event?

I follow the first of these questions further on Was Noah aware of the flood long before it happened? More flood accounts are collected on Flood stories.
