The Hopi appear on this site mostly through their four worlds. In the Hopi telling, each earlier world was destroyed after people forgot the Creator’s plan, and the faithful were carried into the next. The top picture shows canyon country on the Colorado Plateau, the part of the American Southwest where the Hopi live. These are the pages where I follow their teaching and the people who compare it with others.
Four worlds, three destructions
On Floods, Meteor strikes and Mantel shifts I summarize Hopi’s Four Worlds from the Book of the Hopi, in which Taiowa works through Sótuknang and each world falls into decline. The earth to spin off balance takes up the Second World, which freezes into ice after the guardian twins abandon their poles. On Hopi vs 2 Enoch vs Atrahasis I set the Hopi emergence myth beside the Slavonic book of Enoch and the Babylonian flood epic, step by step.
Teachers and listeners
On A Hopi creation teaching on the earth’s tilt Thomas O. Mills retells the creation as a lesson about the planet’s lean, polar ice and the path of the sun. On Thomas Banyacya teaches Hopi prophecy Banyacya speaks in 1995 as an interpreter for Hopi leaders and says that the ceremonies keep land and life steady. A Message From Hopi Elders offers a different note, the image of a fast river that you must enter instead of clinging to the shore.
The Hopi blue star and the masked dancer presents Saquasohuh and the blue star sign. The same page gives the skeptical side, that Jason Colavito found no blue star in Frank Waters’s book.
Kivas and the lost land
Kiva rituals are sacred ceremonies performed within kivas looks at the underground chamber with its fire pit and its sipapu, the small hole that stands for the emergence from the underworld. On What Was the Lost Continent of Mu? I follow Oswald “White Bear” Fredericks, the main Hopi consultant for the Book of the Hopi, who names the Third World Kásskara and says it is what we call Lemuria or Mu. In the account he gave Josef Blumrich, retold by Shawn Hamilton, the survivors crossed east to the Fourth World:
It was the same country as that we had lived on in our Second World, Tokpa, but its appearance was different.
Oswald "White Bear" Fredericks, quoted on What Was the Lost Continent of Mu?
