Abydos is the place Egyptians went to be near Osiris. Kings were buried there before the pyramids existed, pilgrims came for thousands of years after, and the Temple of Seti I still stands over a stranger, older building half sunk in groundwater. For the writers on this site it is either where Egypt began or where an even older story shows through. This page collects both.
The city of Osiris
On The Osiris temple at Abydos the host of the Osiris Project presents Abydos as the main pilgrimage centre for Osiris and for hopes of life after death; the god himself has his own page, Osiris. The holy trinities names the Abydos triad of Osiris, Isis and Harpocrates. In The Problem of Atlantis (1925) Lewis Spence counts Abydos and Mendes as the first dynastic centres of Osiris worship, and concludes that a centre of Osirian worship existed at Abydos in the First Dynasty.
On The Discovery of the Tomb of Osiris in 1898 Ancient Architects retells how Emile Amelineau announced on the first day of 1898 that a tomb he was clearing at Abydos belonged to Osiris. Clara Iza von Ravn’s Selestor’s Men of Atlantis has the same tomb:
Osiris lieth in his rock-bound tomb below Abydos; thus ye speak the name; his hands outspread to bless his followers, his loved wife beside him, wrought in stone.
Clara Iza von Ravn, Selestor's Men of Atlantis
The first kings
Pre-dynastic Rulers ties the Scorpion King to Tomb U-j at Abydos and finds the names of Ka and Iry-Hor in inscriptions there, and on Athothis, king of the First Dynasty the royal tombs of Umm el-Qa’ab are part of the evidence. On Matthew Adams on kingship at Abydos the archaeologist looks at Abydos, not only Giza, for the start of kingship, and sees its monuments copied later:
The pyramid is inside this huge rectangular enclosure that really is more or less a copy of these Abydos monuments.
Matthew Adams, Kingship at Abydos, at 51:06
The Osirion and the Temple of Seti I
The Temple of Osirion describes the complex of the Temple of Seti I and the partly submerged Osirion behind it. On Sumer: The First Known Civilization Jim Marrs writes that images on the ceiling beams of the Temple of Seti appear to depict a modern helicopter, submarine, airplane and hovercraft, and the list of out-of-place artifacts gives those hieroglyphs together with the Abydos boat pits.
Older than Egypt?
On Atlantis Connection To Abydos the narrator calls Abydos a place that may hold clues to a story beginning thousands of years before Egyptian civilization is supposed to start, and mentions a city near Abydos announced in 2016 and dated to about 7,000 years ago. On Kryon tour stop at Abydos Lee Carroll relays Kryon as putting the masonry as much as ten thousand years earlier than the usual date. On Lee Carroll in Abydos, The Place Where Egypt Began he introduces the site with that title’s phrase.
