The host of the Osiris Project combines a short visit to Abydos with a history of its sanctuary of Osiris. In his account the city became the chief cult place of the god of the underworld and of return to life, and pilgrims went there seeking a blessed afterlife. He credits Senusret III with raising its rank, and later rulers, including Seti I, with further building. Courts and columned halls led to an inner room holding a cult image and a relic of the burial. Once a year the mysteries replayed the murder by Seth and the restoration, moving in procession toward the cemetery. He then turns to the fabric of the site. Cracks, sinking ground, and voids under the foundations, a thick outer wall, and a descent that stopped quickly are what he says he found. Local lore still treats a nearby monkey temple as a place of exorcism, and a monastery is said to cleanse the ruins on a fixed calendar. He leaves with a cistern mentioned by Strabo and a list of open questions.
