The Aztecs: Aztlan, the Five Suns and the Flood

The Aztec sources on this site call their homeland Aztlan, a name close to Atlan and Atlantis. Across those pages I kept finding the same three themes: a homeland across the water, a series of world ages that each ended in disaster, and a flood with a boat and two survivors.

I try to be fair to both sides. In the mainstream reading, Aztlan is a place somewhere in the north of Mexico. In the reading of Ignatius Donnelly and the writers after him, it is a memory of Atlantis. Below I go through what I found, one page at a time.

Aztlan or Atlan

The Aztec origin story is the reason the Aztecs matter so much for this site. Eric Dubay puts it like this:

The Toltecs, Nahuatlacas, and Aztecs of South America and all the races that settled Mexico traced their ancestors back to a starting point called "Aztlan" or "Atlan," in the Atlantic.

Eric Dubay, The Atlantean Conspiracy (file dated 31 March 2008), file p. 289

I compare the land, the migration and the names on The Origins of the Toltecs, Nahuatlacas, Aztecs: Aztlan or Atlan and in my review of The Atlantean Conspiracy.

The video Huitzilopochtli, His People, Their Ark and Migration From Aztlan follows the long walk from Aztlan to the Valley of Mexico. The priests carried their god in a coffer, and the video sets that next to the Hebrew Ark.

The Five Suns

The Aztecs did not see one world. They saw five. Each age, or Sun, ended in a disaster, and we live in the fifth. I describe each Sun on The 5 Suns, from the Jaguar Sun of Tezcatlipoca to the Water Sun that ended in a flood.

The Codex Vaticanus 3738, also called the Codex Rios, records the same ages. See The Codex Vaticanus, where I focus on the four ages and the flood.

The flood

The water goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, “She of the Jade Skirt”, is credited with a great flood that reshaped the world. The flood story has its own Noah. Dubay again:

In Aztec mythology only Coxcoxtli and his wife Xochiquetzal were forewarned of the flood by God and survived by building a huge boat. They wandered for 104 years before landing in "Antlan."

The calendar

The Aztecs counted time in cycles. Daniel Wilson noted:

At the close of the fifteenth century, the Aztecs had learned to correct their calendar to solar time; but their cycle was one of only fifty-two years.

Tenochtitlan

The capital was Tenochtitlan, founded in 1325 by the Mexica on an island in Lake Texcoco. It had canals, causeways and a huge market. When the Spanish came, it was one of the largest cities in the world.

Pyramids and feathered serpents

Dubay also compares the pyramids of Mexico with the pyramids of Egypt. On the same file page he says the base length of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacán is identical to the base of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The feathered serpent links the Aztecs to the wider serpent symbolism. In Serpent symbols and the naga as risen energy, Open Minded Approach says:

The Mayans and the Aztec gods were portrayed as feathered serpents.

What was lost

Much of the Aztec record did not survive. On Why much of Ancient American history is lost I follow the timeline from 1492 onward. Up to 90% of the people died in some areas from disease, violence and slavery. Ed Barnhart gives a similar figure for the Americas:

As far as our estimates, we're thinking it's somewhere around 150 million people and 90% of them died.
