Lamech

Lamech appears in two different genealogical lines in Genesis:

1. Lamech, the descendant of Cain: This Lamech is a sixth-generation descendant of Cain and is known for his boast about killing a young man and having multiple wives, Adah and Zillah.
2. Lamech, the descendant of Seth: This Lamech is a father of Noah and comes much later in the genealogy that starts with Seth. He is noted for living 777 years and for his role in the narrative leading up to the biblical Flood.

Son of Methuselah, Father of Noah

This Lamech, distinct from another figure of the same name in Cain’s line, is a patriarch in Genesis 5:25–31. He was born when his father Methuselah was 187 years old and fathered Noah at age 182 (per the Masoretic Text) or 188 (per the Septuagint). After Noah’s birth, Lamech lived another 595 years, having other sons and daughters, for a total lifespan of 777 years. He died five years before the Flood. In Genesis 5:29, Lamech prophesies about Noah: “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed,” linking to the curse on the ground from Genesis 3:17 and expressing hope for relief through his son. Lamech is also listed in Luke 3:36 in Jesus’ genealogy.

In apocryphal texts, Lamech’s story expands dramatically. The Genesis Apocryphon includes the “Book of Lamech,” where he expresses doubt about Noah’s paternity upon seeing the child’s miraculous appearance, fearing involvement from the Watchers or Nephilim. He consults his father Methuselah, who seeks Enoch’s guidance; Enoch confirms Noah is Lamech’s legitimate, righteous son, destined to renew the world. A similar narrative appears in 1 Enoch 106–107, where Lamech panics over Noah’s supernatural features (e.g., shining like the sun), and Enoch reassures Methuselah of Noah’s role in surviving an impending apocalypse. In the Book of Jubilees, Lamech marries Betenos, daughter of Baraki’il (his father’s brother), in the 15th jubilee.

Islamic texts portray Lamech similarly to the Bible, as Noah’s father. An Afghan legend claims he is buried 50 km from Mihtarlam (a town possibly named after him), with a tomb built by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. In the 2014 film Noah, Lamech (played by Marton Csokas) passes a serpent skin relic to Noah before being killed by Tubal-cain.

For completeness, Genesis mentions another Lamech in chapter 4:17–24, a seventh-generation descendant of Cain. He is the first polygamist in the Bible, married to Adah and Zillah, and father to Jabal (originator of tent-dwelling and livestock breeding), Jubal (musicians), Tubal-Cain (metalworkers), and Naamah. He boasts of killing a young man for injuring him, claiming vengeance 77 times greater than Cain’s. This Lamech is unrelated to Methuselah and represents a separate, more violent lineage tied to cultural innovations but moral decline.
