0:12 – Elohim and Creation
In the first chapter of the Bible, the name for God is Elohim (number 430), which is plural and means “divine ones.” The Elohim, or divine ones, are more than one. This word is used throughout the entire first chapter of Genesis.
0:36 – Verse 1: Creation of Heaven and Earth
Verse 1 says the Elohim created the heaven and the earth. The word translated as “created” (number 1254a) means to create new conditions and circumstances, a transformation. The word translated as “heavens” (number 8064) also means sky, atmosphere, or air. Thus, Genesis 1:1 can be translated as: “In the beginning, the Elohim created new conditions in the atmosphere of the earth.”
1:32 – Verse 2: Earth’s Condition and Spirit
Verse 2 states: “And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the spirit of Elohim moved upon the face of the waters.” The word translated as “spirit” (number 7307) also means wind or air, and the word translated as “face” (number 6440) means surface. So, verse 2 can be translated as: “And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the surface of the deep, and the wind of the Elohim moved upon the surface of the waters.”
2:20 – Verse 3: Creation of Light
Verse 3 says: “And the Elohim said, let there be light, and there was light. And the Elohim saw the light, that it was good, and the Elohim divided the light from the darkness.” The order of events in verses 1–3 suggests the Elohim created new conditions in the atmosphere, which was initially dark due to dust and debris, preventing sunlight from reaching the surface. The wind of the Elohim moved upon the surface, clearing the atmosphere, allowing light to reach the earth.
3:42 – Verse 4: Division of Light and Darkness
Verse 4 states: “And the Elohim saw the light, that it was good, and the Elohim divided the light from the darkness.” This indicates the Elohim cleared the darkness to let sunlight shine on the land.
3:48 – Verse 5: Naming Day and Night
Verse 5 says: “And the Elohim called the light day, and the darkness they called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” The word “he” is not in the original Hebrew, as Elohim is plural, so it should be “they called it night.” The word “day” can mean a 24-hour period, one year (Ezekiel 4:6), or a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8). Each day in Genesis 1 likely refers to one year or a thousand years.
5:21 – Verse 6: Creation of the Firmament
Verse 6 says: “And the Elohim said, let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” The word translated as “firmament” (number 7549) means extended surface. The word for “waters” (number 4325) can mean springs, wells, rivers, seas, subterranean waters, or waters in the clouds. Thus, verse 6 can be translated as: “Let there be an extended surface in the midst of the waters and separate the waters in the seas from the waters in the clouds.”
6:38 – Verse 7: Division of Waters
Verse 7 states: “And the Elohim made the firmament and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament, and it was so.” This refers to the extended surface separating the waters below from the waters above.
7:13 – Verse 8: Naming the Firmament
Verse 8 says: “And the Elohim called the firmament heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.” The word “heaven” (number 8064) means atmosphere. This suggests the Elohim established the water cycle (hydrologic cycle) by dividing seas from water in the atmosphere, enabling evaporation and condensation.
9:01 – Verse 9: Gathering of Waters
Verse 9 states: “And the Elohim said, let the waters under the atmosphere be gathered together into one place, and let dry land appear, and it was so.”
9:20 – Verse 10: Naming Earth and Seas
Verse 10 says: “And the Elohim called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters they called seas, and the Elohim saw that it was good.” The word “he” is inaccurate; it should be “they” due to the plural Elohim. This verse indicates the Elohim increased land mass, consistent with scientific findings that early Earth was mostly covered with water until about 2.5 billion years ago.
11:06 – Verses 11–13: Creation of Plants
Verses 11–13 state: “And the Elohim said, let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth, and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after its kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after its kind, and the Elohim saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.” This describes the creation of plants and trees during the third day or thousand-year period.
12:08 – Verse 14: Lights in the Firmament
Verse 14 says: “And the Elohim said, let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” The word “light” (number 3974) means light (singular). This can be translated as: “The light in the expanse of the sky that separates the day from the night will be for signs, appointed times, days, and years.”
13:08 – Verses 15–16: Lights to Illuminate
Verses 15–16 state: “And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and it was so. And the Elohim made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; they made the stars also.” The word “made” (number 6213a) also means “observe carefully.” Thus, it can be translated as: “The light in the expanse of the sky shines on the earth, so the Elohim observed carefully the two great lights, the great light that dominates the day, and the small light that dominates the night, and the stars.”
15:33 – Verses 17–19: Brightening the Sky
Verses 17–19 say: “And the Elohim permitted the expanse of the sky to become bright on the land and dominate the day and night, and divide the light from the darkness, and the Elohim saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” This indicates the Elohim caused the sun, moon, and stars to be visible on Earth.
16:19 – Verse 20: Creation of Sea and Flying Creatures
Verse 20 states: “And the Elohim said, let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and flying creatures that may fly above the earth in the open expanse of the atmosphere.” The word “fowl” (number 5775) means flying creatures, including birds and winged insects. The word “firmament” (number 7549) means expanse, and “heaven” (number 8064) means atmosphere.
17:40 – Verse 21: Conditions for Sea Creatures
Verse 21 says: “And the Elohim created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged flying creature after their kind, and the Elohim saw that it was good.” The word “created” (number 1254) also means creating new conditions. The word for “whales” (number 8577) can mean dragon, sea monster, or whale. Thus, it can be translated as: “The Elohim created new conditions for great whales and every living creature that moves.”
18:50 – Verses 22–23: Blessing of Creatures
Verses 22–23 state: “And the Elohim blessed them, saying, be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the flying creatures multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.” This describes the creation of conditions to sustain sea and flying creatures during the fifth day or thousand-year period.
19:20 – Verse 24: Creation of Land Creatures
Verse 24 says: “And the Elohim said, let the earth bring forth the living creatures after their kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beasts of the earth after their kind, and it was so.” The word “he” is inaccurate; it should be “their” due to the plural Elohim.
20:07 – Verse 25: Bringing About Land Animals
Verse 25 states: “And the Elohim brought about the beasts of the earth after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps upon the earth after their kind, and the Elohim saw that it was good.” The word “made” (number 6213) also means “brought about.”
20:57 – Verse 26: Creation of Humans
Verse 26 says: “And the Elohim said, let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” The word “man” (number 120) means human being. This indicates the Elohim are human or humanoid and gave dominion over the earth to humans, suggesting benevolence.
22:36 – Verse 27: Humans in Elohim’s Image
Verse 27 states: “The Elohim created humans in their image, in the image of the Elohim they created them, male and female they created them.” The word “he” is inaccurate; it should be “they” due to the plural Elohim.
23:51 – Verse 28: Blessing of Humans
Verse 28 says: “And the Elohim blessed them, and the Elohim said to them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and bring it under cultivation, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” The word “subdue” means to bring under cultivation.
24:32 – Verse 29: Plants for Food
Verse 29 states: “And the Elohim said, behold, we have given you every plant bearing seed, which is upon the surface of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food.” The word “herb” means plant, “face” (number 6440) means surface, and “meat” (number 402) means food.
25:25 – Verse 30: Food for Animals
Verse 30 says: “And to every beast of the earth, and to every flying creature of the air, and to everything that creeps upon the earth, wherein there is life, every green plant will be for food, and it was so.”
26:10 – Verse 31: Everything Was Good
Verse 31 states: “And the Elohim saw everything that they had made, and behold, the abundance was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” The word “he” is inaccurate; it should be “they” due to the plural Elohim.
26:56 – Summary
Genesis chapter 1 describes how the Elohim, who appear to be human or humanoid, made the earth habitable for life. They created new conditions in the atmosphere, established the water cycle, increased land mass, and brought forth plants, animals, and humans, giving humans dominion over the earth.
