Noah

Era of the Great Floods

Regarding the specific content about a great flood, the traditional Emerald Tablets do not explicitly discuss a great flood in the manner of biblical or mythological flood narratives like those found in the story of Noah from the Bible or the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Noah and the flood

Genesis Apocryphon

Columns 2-5 tell the story of the birth of Noah, using both third-person accounts, and first person language from the point of view of Lamech, Noah's father.

This passage opens with the title "[A Copy of] The Book of the Words of Noah", which parallels Persian chancery hand.

The narrative is written in first person from Noah's point of view and is his testament about the events that took place during his life.

Column 6 begins with Noah's declaration that he is a righteous man who has been warned about darkness.

6, line 13), comes to Noah with a warning about an upcoming flood.

Noah heeds the being's proclamation, and thus survives the flood in an ark with his family.

When the flood has ceased, the ark comes to rest in the Ararat mountains, and Noah leaves the boat to give a thank offering to God.

God appears to Noah and makes a covenant with him to rule over the earth, so long as he and his sons do not consume blood.

This covenant between God and man is made manifest by a rainbow "a sign for [Noah] in the clouds" (col.

Noah and his family adhere to the covenant by cultivating the land.

Children are born to Noah's sons, and he plants a vineyard.

Four years after the flood, Noah holds a festival in his vineyard to praise God.

The interpretation of the vision is also granted to Noah; he is the cedar tree with many shoots because he will have many descendants.

The passage ends with a detailed description of how Noah divides up the land among his sons, who in turn divide their shares of land among their sons.

This series of columns is a retelling of the story of Abram, though with much closer adherence to the biblical Genesis than the Noah account, sometimes even translating portions of the Genesis text verbatim.

Sumerian Cities

Shuruppak is known for being the city associated with the Sumerian king Ziusudra, who is a figure in Sumerian flood myths similar to the biblical story of Noah.

Genesis 12

Abram & Sarai

Noah was 600 years old when the Flood came (Genesis 7:6).

Aessir Anunnaki

Noah (950 years)

In addition to Enoch, the Book of Jubilees (7:21–25) also states that ridding the Earth of these Nephilim was one of God's purposes for flooding the Earth in Noah's time.

Genesis 10

Noah’s offspring

This is the biblical genealogy according to the Book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible, which outlines the descendants of Noah's three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth after the Flood.

[1] Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.[2] The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.[3] And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.[4] And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.[5] By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.[6] And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.[7] And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.[8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.[9] He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.[10] And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.[11] Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,[12] And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.[13] And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,[14] And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.[15] And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,[16] And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,[17] And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,[18] And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.[19] And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.[20] These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.[21] Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.[22] The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.[23] And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.[24] And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.[25] And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.[26] And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazar-maveth, and Jerah,[27] And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,[28] And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,[29] And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.[30] And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east.[31] These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.[32] These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

Genesis 9

The everlasting covenant

[1] And GOD Anu blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.[2] And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.[3] Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.[4] But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.[5] And surely your blood bloodline of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man altered humans; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man altered humans.[6] Whoso sheddeth shed man altered humans's blood, by man altered humans shall his blood be shed: for in the image of GOD Anu made he man altered humans.[7] And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.[8] And GOD Anu spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,[9] And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;[10] And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.[11] And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.[12] And GOD Anu said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:[13] I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.[14] And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:[15] And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.[16] And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between GOD Anu and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.[17] And GOD Anu said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.[18] And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.[19] These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.[20] And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:[21] And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.[22] And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren brothers without.[23] And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.[24] And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.[25] And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren brothers.

[26] And he said, Blessed be the LORD God The altered descendant of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.[27] God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.[28] And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty 350 years.[29] And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty 955 years: and he died.

According to the Bible, Shem, one of Noah's three sons, had several sons and became the ancestor of various peoples.

These genealogies are part of the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, which provides a listing of the descendants of Noah's sons and the nations they became.

Genesis 8

Waters decreased

[1] And GOD Anu remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and GOD Anu made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;[2] The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven portals were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;[3] And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty 150 days the waters were abated became less intense.[4] And the ark rested in the seventh 7th month, on the seventeenth 17th day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

[5] And the waters decreased continually until the tenth 10th month: in the tenth 10th month, on the first 1st day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.[6] And it came to pass at the end of forty 40 days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:[7] And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro moves around until the waters were dried up from off the earth.[8] Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;[9] But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.[10] And he stayed yet other seven 7 days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;[11] And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.[12] And he stayed yet other seven 7 days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.[13] And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first 601 years, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.[14] And in the second 2nd month, on the seven and twentieth 27th day of the month, was the earth dried.[15] And God spake unto Noah, saying,[16] Go forth of the ark, thou you, and thy your wife, and thy your sons, and thy your sons' wives with thee you.[17] Bring forth with thee you every living thing that is with thee you, of all pure flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.[18] And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:[19] Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.[20] And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD Enlil; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.[21] And the LORD Enlil smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD Enlil said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.[22] While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Genesis 7

Noah and The flood

The god who instructed Noah to build the arc was Uriel or Anu

Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spoke, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, and said to him: Go to Noah and tell him in my name "Hide thyself!" and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it.

In his History of Armenia, he wrote that Noah and his family first settled in Armenia and later moved to Babylon. Hayk, a descendant of Japheth, a son of Noah, revolted against Bel (the biblical Nimrod) and returned to the area around Mount Ararat, where he established the roots of the Armenian nation.

[1] And the LORD Enlil said unto Noah, Come thou you and all thy your house into the ark; for thee you have I seen righteous before me in this generation bloodline.[2] Of every clean beast thou you shalt take to thee you by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.[3] Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.[4] For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty 40 days and forty 40 nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.[5] And Noah did according unto all that the the LORD Enlil commanded him.[6] And Noah was six hundred 600 years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.[7] And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.[8] Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,[9] There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as GOD Anu had commanded Noah.[10] And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.[11] In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month (77 days?), the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the the windows of heaven portals were opened.[12] And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.[13] In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;[14] They, and every original beast after his kind, and all the pure/original cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.[15] And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.[16] And they that went in, went in male and female of all pure flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.[17] And the flood was forty 40 days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.[18] And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.[19] And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.[20] Fifteen cubits 6.75 meters upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

(Then it's likely that the ark was built on a mountain top)[21] And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:[22] All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.[23] And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man altered humans, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.[24] And the waters prevailed upon the earth 150 an hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 6

Age limit to 120 years

[1] And it came to pass, when men human began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,[2] That the sons of God Assendence of Aessir saw the daughters of men human that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.[3] And the LORD Enlil said, My spirit appearance shall not always strive with man altered humans, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be limited to an hundred and twenty 120 years.[4] There were giants, Nemhir, in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God Assendence of Aessir came in unto the daughters of men human, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men human which were of old, men human of renown - Methuselah, Lamech, Adam, Seth..[5] And GOD Anu saw that the wickedness rebellion of man altered humans was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.[6] And it repented the LORD Enlil that he had made man altered humans on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.[7] And the LORD Enlil said, I will destroy man altered humans whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man altered humans, and altered beast, and the altered creeping thing, and the altered fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.[8] But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD Enki.[9] These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man altered human and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God Anu.

[10] And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.[11] The earth also was corrupt before God Anu, and the earth was filled with violence.[12] And God Anu looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.[13] And God Anu said unto Noah, The end of all flesh altered life is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.[14] Make thee you an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.[15] And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits 135 meters, the breadth of it fifty cubits 22.5 meters, and the height of it thirty cubits 13.5 meters.[16] A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.[17] And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh altered life, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing altered thing that is in the earth shall die.[18] But with thee you will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy your sons, and thy your wife, and thy your sons' wives with thee you.[19] And of every living thing of all original flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee you; they shall be male and female.[20] Of fowls after their kind original fowls, and of cattle after their kind original cattle, of every original creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.[21] And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.[22] Thus did Noah; according to all that God Anu commanded him, so did he.

Genesis 6:9 seems straightforward: "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God" (KJV).

The first occurrence—"These are the generations"—is rendered from toledoth (Strong's #8435; note that it is plural), meaning "descent," "history," or "genealogy." The NKJV corrects this first error by using the word "genealogy"—"This is the genealogy of Noah"—although this is still a singular word.

This the genealogy of Noah: Noah was a lawful man and entire in his genealogy, and Noah walked with God

Genesis 5

Adam’s Descendants

The genealogy from Adam (the first man, according to the Bible) to Noah is as follows:

Noah, Lamech’s son, lived for 950 years.

The flood is said to have occurred in Noah’s 600th year.

If you add up the ages, starting with the birth of Adam to the birth of Noah, and then add Noah’s age at the time of the flood (600 years), the total time from the Garden of Eden to the flood is:

29 and he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which Elohim YHWH hath cursed.

30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Atrahasis

The Atrahasis Epic is considered one of the earliest known accounts of a great flood and shares similarities with other flood myths, including the biblical story of Noah.

Genesis 4

Cain and Abel

Alexander Winchell proposed that Genesis 4 is pre Deluge, perhaps the 500th year of Noah.

Book of Genesis

And Enlil said unto Noah, Come thou you and all thy your house into the ark; for thee you have I seen righteous before me in this generation bloodline.

Anu remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that were with him in the ark.

Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

Genesis 10 – Noah’s offspring

Ninmah and Enki

Samuel Noah Kramer believes that behind this myth of Enki's confinement of Abzu lies an older one of the struggle between Enki and the Dragon Kur (the underworld).

The great flood stories

There is a relationship between Utnapishtim, Ziusudra, and Noah.

Noah is the hero of the biblical flood story, which is recorded in the Book of Genesis.

According to the Bible, God decided to destroy humanity with a flood, but Noah was warned by God and built an ark to save himself, his family, and various animals.

After the flood, Noah made sacrifices to God and was promised that humanity would never again be destroyed by a flood.

The story of Ziusudra and the Great Flood is similar to the story of Noah's Ark in the Bible and other flood myths from around the world.

This narrative strikingly parallels the account in Genesis, where it is written, "Noah again sent out the dove from the ark.

In the evening, the dove returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf in her mouth, indicating to Noah that the waters had subsided from the earth." (Genesis 8:10-11)

The Havasupai tribe, residing in the Grand Canyon region, shares a flood story where a single girl survives by sheltering inside a hollow tree that floats on the floodwaters, akin to their version of Noah's ark.

The Tohono O’odham tribe in Arizona recounts a flood narrative featuring Montezuma, their version of Noah.

In their story, the roles of Noah's raven and dove are replaced by a coyote.

Their story details, "Once everyone was safely inside, the opening sealed itself, just in time to shelter them from the roaring floodwaters outside." They also vaguely remember the story of Noah's raven and dove.

They recall God's promise to Noah not to destroy the world again with a flood, echoing the biblical narrative.

In the Apache tribe's flood story, Kuterastan, their equivalent of Noah, anticipated the flood and constructed a substantial vessel, referred to as a “tus.” He used gum from the pinion tree to seal it, similar to how pitch is used.

Interestingly, one version of this story mentions the survival of seven people, one fewer than the eight survivors in the biblical account of Noah's flood.
