Great Flood Story

Cherokee Flood Story

A long time ago, a man had a dog that began to behave strangely.

Every day, the dog would go down to the river, look at the water, and howl mournfully.

The man grew angry and scolded the dog for its odd behavior.

To his surprise, the dog spoke to him and warned, “Very soon there is going to be a great flood, and the water will rise so high that everyone will drown. But if you make a raft, you can save yourself and your family. However, before the flood comes, you must throw me into the water.”

The man did not believe the dog at first. To convince him, the dog said, “If you want a sign that I speak the truth, look at the back of my neck.”

When the man looked, he saw that the dog’s neck had the skin worn off, revealing the bones beneath. Realizing the dog was telling the truth, the man began to build a raft.

Soon, the rain started, just as the dog had foretold. The man took his family onto the raft, bringing plenty of provisions with them.

The rain continued for a long time, and the water rose higher and higher until even the mountains were submerged. All the people in the world were drowned, except for the man and his family on the raft.

After a long period, the rain finally stopped, and the waters began to recede. Eventually, it was safe for the man and his family to leave the raft. As they settled back on dry land, they believed they were the only survivors.

One day, the man heard the sound of dancing and shouting coming from the other side of a ridge.

Curious, he climbed to the top of the ridge and looked over. Everything was still, but he saw great piles of bones scattered along the valley.

These were the remains of the people who had drowned in the flood. The man realized that the ghosts of these people had been dancing and making the noises he heard.
