The Teaching of Unity Against Division

The video discusses the importance of unity within families, communities, and nations, rooted in traditional Navajo teachings. According to these teachings, the existence of division prevents true progress and is viewed as a harmful influence, often described as originating from an external force.

Historical Perspective on the Origin of the Diné People

The speaker explains that the Diné (Navajo) people’s origin is traditionally understood to come from the East, countering more recent teachings suggesting a northern origin. Navajo history also speaks of an ancient division that separated males and females by a wide river. This division is known as the “Great Division,” dating back to before the emergence of five-fingered beings on Mother Earth. This concept of division was rooted in the Blue World (or Turquoise World), where two opposing forces, “yes” and “no,” first emerged.

The Arrival of the Diné and Their Role as Peacemakers

As the Diné entered their current region, they settled between the Rio Grande and Colorado Rivers. The land’s natural boundaries, including the Book Cliffs near present-day Grand Junction, Colorado, marked their territory. This area is known in traditional Navajo teachings as the setting of some of the earliest Diné stories. Around 2,000 years ago, the Diné encountered other groups in the region, who frequently engaged in violent conflicts among tribes and families.

The Diné teachings encouraged unity, and they became known as peacemakers, promoting peace among the different groups. Over time, these groups integrated with the Diné people, each forming their own clan. At one time, the Diné counted as many as 147 clans, with many diverse people united under this system.

The Influence of Division and the Importance of Unity

The speaker addresses the nature of division as influenced by an “evil one” who incites people to separate through disagreements and opposition. Navajo teachings emphasize that true progress cannot occur if there is division within a group. For the Diné, unity, or “El,” is essential to achieving joy, happiness, confidence, and peace within families and communities.

The Journey of the Beauty Way Path

Unity is central to the concept of the Beauty Way, a traditional Navajo prayer and path that seeks harmony in all directions: before, behind, above, below, and around. Without unity within the family and community, the path of beauty cannot be fully realized.

The Call to Avoid Division in Navajo Teachings

Navajo ceremonial songs, prayers, and practices reiterate the importance of avoiding division and conflict. Traditional teachings encourage open communication and shared understanding to cultivate a harmonious environment. The speaker concludes by reinforcing that avoiding contention and division allows for the flourishing of good things within the community and individual lives.
