Dogs are easy to overlook in old stories, but in my research they guard the underworld, warn of the flood and give their name to Sirius, the Dog Star. These are the pages where I wrote about them.
The dog that warned of the flood
The Cherokee flood story has a dog in the role of the foreseer. In the version I give on Cherokee people: Only seven groups completed the journey, cited to Gaster, a dog howls at the river bank day after day, tells its master that a flood is coming, and asks to be thrown into the water. Cherokee Flood Story tells the same story.
Dogs in Atlantis and among its colonies
W. Scott-Elliot describes the domestic animals of the Toltec age in The Story of Atlantis – focus on the occult investigation of Atlantis and its sub-races:
Large cat-like animals and the wolf-like ancestors of the dog might also be met about human habitations.

Ignatius Donnelly finds dogs in his parallels between the Old World and the New. In Genesis contains a history of Atlantis he writes:
The Jewish custom of laying the sins of the people upon the head of an animal, and turning him out into the wilderness, had its counterpart among the Mexicans, who, to cure a fever, formed a dog of maize paste and left it by the roadside, saying the first passer-by would carry away the illness.

In The Indentity of the Civilizations of the Old World and the New he compares the Ojibbeway belief in the ominous fox bark with the European fear of a howling dog.
Guardians and the Dog Star
Herculus ends with the last labor, the capture of Cerberus, the three-headed dog at the gate of the underworld. The island of Erytheia was guarded by Orthrus, a two-headed dog, and the cattle were herded by the giant Eurytion gives Cerberus’s two-headed brother. On Anubis, guide of the underworld I quote Lyssa Royal’s The Prism of Lyra that links the dog or jackal of Anubis to the Dog Star, and Sirius explains why Sirius carries that name.
