Did Noah know the flood was coming long before it arrived? The scriptures that tell his story answer yes, but they credit that knowledge to a divine warning, not to watching the sky or the ice. This page sets out what the Qur’an, Genesis and the older Mesopotamian flood texts actually say about the warning, and how much time each one allows.

A warner with a long mission

The Qur’an presents Noah (Nuh) first as a messenger who warned his people over a very long span of time.

Noah lived among his people for 950 years before the flood took them.

And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.

The core of his message was a warning of punishment to come, which makes the flood something he spoke about well before it happened.

Noah told his people he feared a painful day for them.

And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner That you not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."

Qur'an 11:25-26, Sahih International (short excerpt for review and study)

The surah named after him opens the same way. In Qur’an 71:1, Noah is sent to warn his people before a painful punishment reaches them.

When the warning became specific

According to Surah Hud, a turning point came when Noah was told that no one else among his people would believe. In the same passage he was told to build the ship under divine watch and not to plead for the wrongdoers, who were to be drowned (Qur’an 11:36-37). Qur’an 23:27 adds a sign for the moment itself: when the command came and the oven overflowed, Noah was to load a pair of each creature and his family. So the Qur’an describes two kinds of knowledge. One was a long, general warning. The other was a later, precise instruction with a signal to act on.

Surah al-Qamar compresses the ending into three verses: rejection, a prayer for help, and the answer.

Noah’s people called him mad, he called on his Lord, and the rain came.

The people of Noah denied… and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman"… So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

The timeline in Genesis

Genesis also has God tell Noah in advance. In Genesis 6:13-14, God says the end of all flesh has come and orders an ark of gopher wood. The final notice is short and exact.

Genesis gives Noah seven days’ notice before forty days of rain.

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

Genesis 7:6 sets Noah’s age at six hundred years when the flood came. Genesis 6:3 limits human days to a hundred and twenty years; some readers take that as a period of grace before the flood, though the verse itself does not say so.

Older warnings from Mesopotamia

The same pattern appears in older flood stories, where a god leaks the decision of the divine assembly to one man. In the Sumerian flood story, Ziusudra hears through a wall that a flood will come and that the gods have decided to destroy the seed of mankind. In Tablet XI of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the god Ea passes the gods’ plan to Uta-Napishtim of Shuruppak by speaking to the wall of a reed hut.

Ea tells Uta-Napishtim to tear down his house and build a boat.

Pull down, (and) fashion a vessel (therewith); abandon possessions, Life do thou seek, (and) thy hoard disregard, and save life

How these three figures relate is covered in Utnapishtim, Ziusudra and Noah.

What the texts support

In every one of these sources, the hero knows ahead of time because a god tells him. None of them says he read the signs in the stars, saw ice melting, or tracked a meteor stream. Modern ideas that link the flood to an impact from the Taurid meteor stream or to the collapse of ice sheets are speculation that these texts do not support. What the texts do agree on is a warning in two stages: a long time spent warning people who would not listen, then a short, exact instruction to build and board.
