The Vatican is the smallest state in the world and one of the oldest institutions still running, and on this site it plays two very different parts. It is a library, the home of manuscripts that sources lean on, like the Aztec codex that keeps the four ages of the world. And it is a suspect, accused again and again of shelving the texts it does not like. Underneath both sits a Roman hill with a cemetery in it. This page brings the threads together.
The hill before the basilica
On The pagan necropolis under the Vatican toldinstone reconstructs the Roman street of tombs found under St. Peter’s in 1939:
Two thousand years ago, the Vatican lay on the suburban fringe of ancient Rome.
toldinstone, Roman tombs under St. Peter's, at 1:37
On Manuel Bravo on the tomb of Saint Peter Manuel Bravo traces the name to the old Mons Vaticanus, later the site of Nero’s circus and a roadside cemetery. On Matias de Stefano on Rome during the conclave Matías de Stefano says the hill was a burial ground where Simon Peter was killed and buried.
A church built by an empire
The Roman Empire created the Church(Vatican) and The Roman Catholics: a mix-up of faiths follow the Church out of Rome’s imperial politics, and What Was the Council of Nicaea? covers the council where that turn is usually placed. On Sumer: The First Known Civilization Jim Marrs writes that Constantine opened the Lateran Palace, a precursor of the Vatican, to the Bishop of Rome. In Atlantis, Edda und Bibel (1925) Hermann Wieland goes further and has the pope sit on the Vatican hill where a Mithras pope once offered sacrifice.
The Codex Vaticanus
For the Americas the Vatican Library matters for one manuscript. The Codex Vaticanus explains Codex Vaticanus Latinus 3738, also called the Codex Rios, an Aztec manuscript preserved there, and its four ages of the world ending in a flood. In The Problem of Atlantis (1925) Lewis Spence quotes its interpreter on the festival of Tlaloc.
What the archives are said to hide
On The Vatican’s Suppression of the ‘Shining Ones’ from History Freddy Silva puts the exclusion of the Book of Enoch down to the Vatican’s wish to consolidate control. On Billy Carson on lost teachings and hidden shelves Billy Carson calls the Vatican a private kingdom whose cellars hold texts and inventions out of public reach. On Vatican Cover-Up: The Truth About Jesus’ 27-Year Journey Through Egypt, India, and Tibet the Vatican’s wealth and power are set against the teachings of Jesus, and on A templer colony in the Americas before Columbus a letter in the Vatican Secret Archives becomes part of the evidence. Vatican Altered Jesus true teachings makes the claim in its title, but in the talk itself Dr. Robert Gilbert speaks more broadly about esoteric teachings that were kept secret or lost over time.
Apparitions and other beings
The Vatican is preparing guidelines for communication with divine beings. reports the document of 17 May 2024 on discerning supernatural phenomena, with alleged apparitions investigated first by diocesan bishops and then by the Vatican. On Sumer: The First Known Civilization Jim Marrs quotes Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a Vatican spokesman on the UFO issue, saying in 2003 that not believing in other living beings is a sin.
