Ruta is the name the Theosophists gave to the larger, northern island left after Atlantis broke apart about 200,000 years ago. Its smaller southern twin was Daitya. Ruta keeps coming up in my research because it is the stage for the middle period of Atlantis in W. Scott-Elliot, Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater, and Arthur E. Powell. These are the pages where I wrote about it.
Atlantis splits in two
W. Scott-Elliot describes the breakup on The Story of Atlantis – focus on the occult investigation of Atlantis and its sub-races:
The two islands into which Atlantis was now split were known by the names of Ruta and Daitya.
W. Scott-Elliot, The Story of Atlantis

On the same page he tells how a Toltec dynasty rose to power again on Ruta in his third map period and ruled much of the island through tributary kings, a dynasty given to the black arts. William Scott-Elliot Atlantis and Early Atlantis until 48,000 BCE set Ruta and Daitya around 200,000 years ago, and The Solar System – Atlantis shows how Arthur E. Powell follows the same maps, with a northern Ruta and a southern Daitya after that catastrophe.
The cradle of the fifth root race
In Man: Whence, How and Whither, Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater make Ruta the starting point of the next race. On Beginning of the 5th Root Race I quote them:
The isolation of a tribe from the white fifth subrace (the moon-coloured race, as the Stanzas of Dzyan poetically describe it) which lived in the mountains to the north of Ruta, was the first decisive step in the building of the Race, and this took place about 100,000 B. C.
Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater, Man: Whence, How and Whither

They go on to say that most of the people the Manu had prepared in Ruta were devoted to him, while the younger generation grumbled about the pioneer life of the emigration. The Fourth Root Race follows the same book’s timeline, where the second great catastrophe of about 200,000 B.C. splits Atlantis into two huge islands (the name is printed there as Kuta).
The end of Ruta
On Atlantis rose and fell in 3 distinct cycles I note that Besant and Leadbeater wrote of explosions of gas, floods and earthquakes razing Ruta and Daitya. Scott-Elliot dates that convulsion to about 80,000 years ago:
Daitya, the smaller and more southerly of the islands, has almost entirely disappeared, while of Ruta there only remains the relatively small island of Poseidonis.
W. Scott-Elliot, The Story of Atlantis

The Fall of Atlantis: misuse of power and abuse of advanced technologies and Floods, Meteor strikes and Mantel shifts place this in the longer series of Atlantean cycles, with the Ruta and Daitya cycle ending around 80,000 years ago and Poseidonis lasting until the final flood.
