The Hyperboreans were the people “beyond the north wind” of Greek legend. In the Theosophical and Anthroposophical writings I research they became the second root race, living on a northern polar land long before Lemuria and Atlantis. Channeled and contact material adds yet another version. These are the pages where I wrote about them.
The second root race
On What Are Blavatsky’s Root Races? I explain that in Helena Blavatsky’s scheme the second root race, the Hyperboreans, is more physical than the first but still not fully material. The Second Root Race: Hyperborean sets two other versions side by side. Samael Aun Weor places them on horseshoe-shaped lands around the North Pole, with gaseous bodies, clairvoyant faculties, and reproduction by sprouting. In Chapter X of Cosmic Memory, Rudolf Steiner describes humans of that time living in a subtle “firemist”, in forms comparable to water vapor or clouds, floating rather than walking.
In the lecture summarized on Germanic Mythology and Ancient Civilizations, Steiner places the Hyperboreans around the North Pole, in Siberia and northern Europe, in a warm climate, and links the misty Niflheim of Norse myth to this race. The Ahnenerbe also includes Blavatsky’s list of root races, with the Hyperboreans as the second.
W. Scott-Elliot also marked their land on his maps. On The Story of Atlantis – focus on the occult investigation of Atlantis and its sub-races:
The remains of the still older Hyperborean continent which was inhabited by the Second Root Race, are also given, and like Lemuria, coloured blue.
W. Scott-Elliot, The Story of Atlantis

Hyperborea in contact material
The Mission Rahma material of Sixto Paz Wells, which credits its information to the Guides, counts the Hyperboreans as the second of five humanities on Earth. On Mission Rahma and Before Atlantis: Antarctic, Hyperborean, Lemurian and Atlantean humanity I summarize it: a race from elsewhere settled in northern Europe and Greenland, founded Hyperborea with its capital Thule, and was largely wiped out by an asteroid impact, with only a few surviving. On The 5th Dimension, a passage from the book Telos, Volume I, describes the Agartha Network of about 120 underground Cities of Light, mostly inhabited by Hyperboreans.
Hyperboreans and Atlantis
Ignatius Donnelly brought them into his chapter on the compass. On The antiquity of some of our great inventions he writes, citing Herodotus:
The hyperborean magician, Abaras, carried "a guiding arrow," which Pythagoras gave him, "in order that it may be useful to him in all difficulties in his long journey."
Ignatius Donnelly, Atlantis: The Antediluvian World

On The Kings of Atlantis become the Gods of the Greeks he quotes an older writer who counts the Hyperboreans among the Greek legends that point to the Atlantic, next to Hercules and the Hesperides. And in PT 11: Researches Into The Lost History of America – Cyclopean Buildings of Europe Built By Americans, the video links Stonehenge to the island sanctuary of the Hyperboreans described by Diodorus Siculus.
