Mauro Biglino on Flying Machines in the Bible and Homer

Mauro Biglino returns to Homer and the Bible, centered on what he calls flying machines. Divine chariots in the Iliad sit over noisy horses, cross in a moment a distance seen from a peak to the water, and often arrive with cloud, a pattern he also finds in scripture. Hard lines, he says, are clumsy translations of sights ancient writers had no technical words for. From the Iliad he takes Poseidon urging the Greeks against Troy, then leaving in a gait that gives him away. A Greek author he cites explains Egyptian statues whose feet are joined. The gods wear a human shape for the uninitiated, yet the wise see a glide that cuts the air. Hera’s sandals are not reserved for Hermes. She crosses peaks and open water without really touching either, which Biglino reads as travel just above the surface. Hermes, sent toward Calypso, ties on the same golden sandals and rides a wind over sea and land. Biglino links that wind to the biblical ruach that accompanies the Elohim.

Key points

  • Biglino argues that Homer and the Bible both describe vehicles and footgear that carry divine beings above the ground.
  • Cloudy chariots in the Iliad are, for him, the same pattern he has already pointed to in scripture.
  • Awkward translations, he says, come from ancient people naming machines with the only words they had.
  • Joined feet on Egyptian statues of the gods are read as a glide, not as a walking pose.
  • Hera and Hermes both strap on sandals that cross land and sea without truly touching down.
  • He identifies the wind in the Hermes scene with the biblical ruach that travels with the Elohim.
