Shinar is the biblical name for the plain where the tower of Babel rose, and in my reading it ties together Genesis, Sumer, Nimrod and a Mexican pyramid. These are the pages where I wrote about it.
The plain of the tower
On Genesis 11 – Tower of Babel the chapter that introduces the plain begins with one language and one speech:
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
Genesis 11:2 (KJV)
On The Tower of Babel and Confirming the Nimrod – Osiris – Orion – Apollo Connection the discussion starts from Genesis 11, with the people gathered in the plains of Shinar under Nimrod’s leadership, and argues that the tower needed such a large, flat area because of the immense size of its base.
Shinar in the wider Bible
On Chedorlaomer killed the Nephilim Amraphel is king of Shinar in Genesis 14:1, one of the kings in the war of Chedorlaomer. On The origin of Nimrod Genesis 10:10 puts the first centers of Nimrod’s kingdom, Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar, and I note that Shinar may reflect Shanghara, a designation of Kassite Babylonia. On Daniel my chapter table has Nebuchadnezzar bringing the young nobles to Shinar in Daniel 1.
Sumer and the word itself
On Sumer: The First Known Civilization Sumer is also known as Shinar and Chaldea. On Temple of Cholula I follow Jeff A. Benner on the name: the word is not Hebrew in origin, and if the “sh” becomes “s” and the “n” becomes “m”, Shinar turns into Samar.
Shinar in Mexico
Ignatius Donnelly set the Cholula legend beside Genesis. On Genesis contains a history of Atlantis he pairs “all was a plain without hill or elevation” from the Indian legend with the Bible’s plain in the land of Shinar, and notes that both builders used brick. In The Oldest Son of Noah he concludes that the dispersion on the plains of Shinar signifies the breaking up of the tongues of one people under vast spaces of time.
Jesus in Shinar
On The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus Christ Levi H. Dowling has Jesus tarry seven days in the plains of Shinar with Ashbina, the greatest sage of Assyria, meditating on the needs of men.
