Table of Contents
Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, gave us the tablets that first told the flood story outside the Bible. These are the pages where it appears.
The library of Assurbanipal
On The Chaldean Account of the Deluge George Smith explains where the flood tablets came from:
Of the inscription describing the Flood, there are fragments of three copies containing the same texts; these copies belong to the time of Assurbanipal, or about 660 years before the Christian era, and they were found in the library of that monarch in the palace at Nineveh.
George Smith, The Chaldean Account of the Deluge
On The Deluge of the Chaldeans Donnelly cites Lenormant on the tablets exhumed at Nineveh that Smith was the first to decipher. On The Sumerian clay tablet: Planisphere the star disc was found by Layard in the library of the royal palace at Nineveh.
Founders, prophets and fish-gods
On The origin of Nimrod Genesis 10 credits the building of Nineveh to the land of Nimrod, and the page also discusses Ninas, whom it calls the legendary founder of Nineveh. On Jonah the prophet is sent to warn Nineveh, and the whole city repents. On Part-human, part-fish Hea or Ea, the god of the Nineveh tablets, is a fish-god, half man and half fish.
Palaces and symbols
On The Assyrians: Nineveh, the Sacred Tree and the Winged Circle I bring the city together with its sacred tree. On Mariana Giovino, The Assyrian Sacred Tree (2007), Her Findings Giovino notes that by 1853 the palaces of Sennacherib and Aššurbanipal at Nineveh had been at least partly excavated. On Gold and silver the sacred metals of Atlantis Donnelly writes about a pyramid of the palace of Nineveh named in the inscriptions.
