Joanna: Did Joseph tell you anything of the journeys he made with Jesus?
Daniel: He did take Jesus away to travel from time to time, but he usually told me about these journeys afterwards. Joseph traveled a good deal in his trading, and that was a good cloak for his other activities in connecting up with our Essene Brothers. He preferred going by sea, but some sections of his journeys were overland, and that could not be avoided. Joanna:
What did Joseph trade in?
Daniel: Tin mainly, but sometimes other metals too. He avoided the precious metals like gold and silver. He said it would make his work too dangerous as many would then try to rob him. He collected crystals also, but secretly, and this was known only to the Brothers.

A Book of Cornwall
- The tin merchant was recorded by the English clergyman and folklorist Sabine Baring-Gould in his 1899 book A Book of Cornwall. He recorded a local story that Joseph came to Cornwall with the child Jesus.
- The idea that Joseph regularly traveled to Britain for tin is much older (medieval), but the specific connection with Jesus as a boy is a later development.
- There’s even an old Cornish tinners’ saying that goes something like “Joseph was a tin man” or “Joseph was in the tin trade.”
