The Guanches, the first people of the Canary Islands, come up again and again in the Atlantis literature I read. Writers from Donnelly to Scott-Elliot treated them as a possible remnant of the Atlantean population. These are the pages where they appear.
Skulls, sandals and mummies
On Canary Islands: The Gaunches had light skin, fair hair, and blue eyes and in The Story of Atlantis – focus on the occult investigation of Atlantis and its sub-races, W. Scott-Elliot brings in an anthropologist’s view:
Professor Retzius, in his Smithsonian Report, considers that the primitive dolichocephalæ of America are nearly related to the Guanches of the Canary Islands, and to the population on the Atlantic seaboard of Africa, which Latham comprises under the name of Egyptian-Atlantidæ.
W. Scott-Elliot, The Story of Atlantis

Ignatius Donnelly builds the same bridge. On The Indentity of the Civilizations of the Old World and the New he calls the Guanches probably a fragment of the old Atlantean population, who believed in the immortality of the soul. On Artificial Deformation of the Skull his figure sets a Guanche forehead beside a Mound Builder and a Peruvian skull. On Corroborating Circumstances Donnelly cites a comparison between the sandals of the Chacmol statue at Chichen Itza and those found on Guanche mummies in Tenerife. On Atlantis Reconstructed the page notes that the Guanches were men of very great stature. On Mummification the Guanches stand beside the Egyptians and the Peruvians as peoples who preserved their dead.
In later writers
On The Occult Sciences in Atlantis Lewis Spence compares the lower aboriginal race of Atlantis in features and build with the Arab, the Guanche or the Iberian. On The Lost Continent the summary of C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne’s novel mentions an old Guanche university or sacred college on the island.
