Jimmy Corsetti on the Richat Structure and Atlantis

On Joe Rogan’s show, Jimmy Corsetti argues that the Richat Structure in Mauritania, the Eye of the Sahara, is Plato’s Atlantis capital. The dialogue’s city sits in an empire of ten kingdoms, drawn as rings of water and land, open to the south, with mountains north. Satellite views, he says, show old water running south through the Richat, and the Atlas range bears the first king’s name. Mauritania’s earliest known king was also Atlas, a title handed down rather than one immortal person. Red, black, and white stone, local gold, and former elephants join the list. The Sahara, he stresses, was green a few thousand years ago, with rivers and a huge Chad lake, so Plato’s muddy shoal need not be an ocean floor. Salt across the desert and a lava flow he says water cut about twelve thousand years ago mean, for him, a far later inland sea than textbooks allow. He follows the story from Egyptian priests through Solon to about 9600 BC, the end of the Younger Dryas.

Key points

  • Corsetti matches the Richat’s rings, southern water gap, and northern Atlas range to Plato’s capital.
  • Colored stone, gold, elephants, and a repeated royal name Atlas are further items on his list.
  • A green Sahara with huge lakes and rivers is how he explains Plato’s muddy shoal without an ocean-floor city.
  • Salt, sea life, and a cut lava flow are his case that ocean water crossed the region near 12,000 years ago.
  • He dates the sinking through Solon and Egyptian priests to about 9600 BC, at the end of the Younger Dryas.
