The Paracas Skulls and Missing Records

Dan, on DeDunking, says the Paracas skulls from Peru do not yield a simple answer. In the 1920s a burial ground opened by an archaeologist named Julio produced hundreds of funerary bundles and skulls famous for their length. One is described as 28 centimeters long, with a stated capacity of 1655 cubic centimeters. Extreme examples seem to lack the sagittal suture, and many show signs that the cranium was reshaped. The rest of the video is paperwork. Bundle counts swing between figures such as 429 and 451, and sizes do not match. He thinks shifting inventories let objects vanish. Remains traveled abroad, and pieces are still unaccounted for. Later keepers opened many bundles and wrote up only a few. He suspects the striking skulls were split or sold. A DNA note he discusses came from badly degraded material, too thin to explain the shape. He is not issuing a verdict on a people. He thinks the oddest remains may never be public again, and that neither museum files nor online testers have shown data he trusts.

Key points

  • The video presents the Paracas skulls as unusually long, often without a sagittal suture, and sometimes reshaped.
  • Dan lists alien, unknown human, and deformity guesses and does not choose among them.
  • Bundle counts and sizes contradict one another, which he reads as cover for things that went missing.
  • After a coup and years of thin funding, he says remains were moved, poorly stored, and only partly written up.
  • He suspects the most striking skulls were opened and sold rather than studied in public.
  • Degraded DNA, on his account, does not explain the shape, and he does not trust unverified test claims.
