David Vose spends this sitting reading Plato on the ancient land and then lining the names up with scripture. He takes the picture of a fertile promontory, a deep coastal sea, warrior households around Athena and Hephaestus, and Poseidon’s rings of land and water around a central hill, with Atlas as the first son whose island is Atlantis. He treats it as the same story the Bible tells under other symbols. Noah becomes Anu and the Greek sky father, with a winter birth of Set, Saturn, and Satan pinned to late December. Ham’s offense against his father is matched to the wounding of that sky father. Abraham is Zeus and also Osiris, and Sarah’s return with Isaac is a kind of resurrection. Atlantis, he says, lay toward America beyond the straits, sank into the abyss, and is the beast and the pit in Revelation. In that mapping the ten horns mingle older kings with lost tribes, and the beast from the pit is Yahweh. The hour is his table of matches, not a field report.
