Old maps of a green Sahara

GoBlack2Africa plays a Bright Insight narration, then adds a biblical close. Charts of the fourteen hundreds and fifteen hundreds, the narration says, draw a Sahara no modern atlas allows: lakes, rivers, towns, and a Texas sized forest, including maps of 1482 and 1565. He lingers on the Catalan atlas of 1375, once in a French royal library, with Mali’s ruler pictured and the desert full of towns. A Portuguese chart of 1502 paints the interior green, set beside a wet Sahara of about five or six thousand years ago, a giant Chad lake, and buried rivers a recent study ties to travel. A mapmaker placed near the year 150 may have copied older sheets. The Eye of the Sahara is his Atlantis aside: round marks might be that formation while a river from the Atlas reached the ocean, until it dried about five thousand years ago. Climate lessons should not skip these charts. The host then wants the names read as biblical places, garden included. That last step is his addition, not a result the sheets are shown to prove.

Key points

  • The played narration treats late medieval and sixteenth century sheets as evidence of rivers, lakes, woods, and towns across the Sahara.
  • The Catalan atlas of 1375 is the chart he lingers on, with Mali’s ruler pictured and settlements spread through the desert.
  • A green Portuguese chart of 1502 is set beside a wet Sahara of about five to six thousand years ago, a huge Chad lake, and buried rivers.
  • Circular marks near the Eye of the Sahara are compared with Atlantis and with a river from the Atlas that reached the sea until about five thousand years ago.
  • The hosting channel then claims those labels will put biblical places, including the garden, back on African ground.
