LaCroix lecture on a lost world civilization

In The Missing Key, Matthew LaCroix moves from Sumerian flood tablets to masonry he thinks is older than the cultures built over it. Ziusudra, or Utnapishtim in Gilgamesh and the Atrahasis account, is for him the figure behind Noah. Shuruppak, he says, came out from under flood silt, and a map fragment read by Irving Finkel sends the boat toward Lake Van. In eastern Turkey he shows basalt reliefs he calls nearly flawless, stone melted by extreme heat, sun signs, a flower of life, and a cup he reads as a doctrine handed on, all beneath later Urartian and mud brick work. Symbols, not a script, are the only language he grants those builders. The same flower is cut into Aswan granite at the Osireion, under rougher dynastic stone, and the same stepped cross appears at Lake Titicaca and Puma Punku. Later societies took the signs and the credit. He allows the name Atlanteans, then sets it aside. A capable culture stood in many regions until the Younger Dryas, about 11,600 years ago.

Key points

  • LaCroix roots the biblical flood survivor in Mesopotamian tablets and in Shuruppak’s place under a thick blanket of silt.
  • A reconstructed Babylonian map, as he reads it, puts the boat’s landing near Lake Van.
  • Around that lake he shows melted stone, precise basalt carving, and sacred signs under later walls and mud brick.
  • He treats those signs, including the flower of life, as a symbolic teaching about creation rather than as decoration.
  • The Osireion and the Andean stepped cross are his main parallels for the same two layer masonry and the same ideas.
  • The destruction date he offers is the Younger Dryas, about 11,600 years ago, for a culture he sometimes calls Atlantean.
