While not all scholars accept this view, textual inconsistencies support the idea of editorial layering in the flood account.
We now learn that the Flood was sent as a punishment of the Adamites; and if they were all destroyed except Noah and his family, the populations of preadamites remained dispersed widely over northern and estern Asia.
Noah is a Semitic derivative of the much earlier Sumerian name “Utnapishtim” and the Akkadian “Ziusudra.” The writings of these civilizations all portray a Noah-like character who is warned of the flood by the god Enki.
The Genesis story of the flood is a condensation of much earlier and much more detailed pre-Biblical accounts in Sumerian and Akkadian literature.
And when the earth was six hundred years in Noe (the flood of waters was come upon the earth.
The Genesis flood narrative was linked to the Armenian myth of origin by the early medieval historian Movses Khorenatsi.
5And Noah did according unto all that Uriel commanded him.6And Noah was 600 years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
“And when the earth was six hundred years in Noe, the flood of waters was come upon the earth.”Book of Wars Against Jehovih (\~22,552 BCE)
7And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,9There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as Uriel had commanded Noah.10And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.11In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month (77 days?), the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the portals?
Cayce explicitly links this kind of degeneracy to the Noah/flood period.
15And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.16And they that went in, went in male and female of pure flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.17And the flood was 40 days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.18And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
The flood corresponded to the second destruction of Atlantis.
P has a theological agenda: it wants to present the flood as a complete reset — a total judgment on a corrupt world, followed by a new creation with Noah as the new Adam figure.
The flood wiped out not just “wicked people,” but the results of the spiritual and genetic experimentation that had gone too far.
The faithful (I’hins / Faithists / the spiritual seed) are preserved through ships during the great flood/deluge.
Both Cayce and OAHSPE read the flood as a selective cleansing of corrupted lines rather than total planetary extinction of all humans.
The flood directly addresses the consequences of the mixing and experimentation described in chapter 6.
The flood/cataclysm removed much of that corrupted creation.
For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.”
The Flood may have been limited to the habitable world, which Poole considers sufficient for the Flood’s intended purposes.
Cultural memory in India and China supports a tradition of a great flood and a sole surviving family (Puoncuus and family), implying a flood with a strong regional impact.
Ark’s necessity: If the Flood were local, Noah could simply have moved away; building the Ark would have been unnecessary.
Cultural traditions: Many nations preserve flood legends, which he interpreted as proof that the Flood was remembered worldwide.
“Peradventure this flood might not be simply universal over the whole earth, but only over all the habitable world, where either men or beasts lived; which was as much as either the meritorious cause of the flood, men’s sins, or the end of it, the destruction of all men and beasts, required.
… The memory of this general flood is preserved to this day among the poor ignorant Indians, … And the Chinese writers relate, that but one person, whom they call Puoncuus, with his family, were saved in the flood, and all the rest perished.”
Genesis 6:4 records the Nephilim before the flood, while Numbers 13:33 describes them after the flood.
Since Genesis does not record where these women came from, some interpreters argue that not all wives were originally aboard the Ark, and that intermarriage after the flood might have involved survivors from outside Noah’s household.
This verse refers to the spies sent into Canaan, who report encountering descendants of the Nephilim, giants, long after the flood.
Flood could also be the consequence of a magnetic shift.
The god Enlil warned the priest-king Ziusudra (“Long of Life”) of the coming flood by speaking to a wall while Ziusudra listened at the side.
Violent winds came, and a flood of rain covered the earth for seven days and nights.
There were giants before and after a flood
10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.12And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.13And God said unto Noah, The end of all altered life is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.14Make you an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be 135 meters, the breadth of it 22.5 meters, and the height of it 13.5 meters.16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.17And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all altered life, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every altered thing that is in the earth shall die.18But with you will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.19And of every living thing of original flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee you; they shall be male and female.20Of fowls after their kind original fowls, and of cattle after their kind original cattle, of every original creeping thing of the earth, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.21And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.22Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
Where 120 and the šar do meet is in the Babylonian flood tradition.
Berossus, a priest of Babylon who wrote in Greek in the early third century BC, gave ten kings before the Flood, and their reigns added up to 120 šars:
In his second book, Berossus described the ten kings of the Chaldeans and the period of their rule, 120 šars, that is 432,000 years, up to the Flood.
Genesis also has ten generations from Adam to Noah in Genesis 5, and then the number 120 just before the Flood.
This genealogy in Genesis 5 directly precedes Genesis 6, which describes increasing human population and wickedness, leading to God's decision to send the flood.
Genesis 7 - Noah and the Flood
These constructs suggest the ages convey theological truths, such as divine order, generational symmetry (10 patriarchs pre-Flood, mirroring 10 post-Flood), and harmony, rather than biological facts.
The Atrahasis Epic is another ancient Mesopotamian text, dating back to around 1700 BCE, which tells a similar story of a great flood.
Eventually, Enlil decides to unleash a devastating flood to annihilate humanity.
The Atrahasis Epic is considered one of the earliest known accounts of a great flood and shares similarities with other flood myths, including the biblical story of Noah.
The Sumerian Flood Story (known as the ‘Eridu Genesis’) which tells the same story, is certainly older (composed c.
2300 BCE) and Tablet XI of The Epic of Gilgamesh, which also relates the tale of the Great Flood, is even older than that.
The later tablets tell the flood.
The gods swear to send a flood.
Millard, Atra-hasis: The Babylonian Story of the Flood (Oxford, 1969), is also in copyright.
George Smith, The Chaldean Account of Genesis (London, 1876; Project Gutenberg ebook 60559), prints flood pieces from Nineveh.
Behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the lands of the earth, and I will destroy all flesh wherein is the breath of life.
But my covenant is with my chosen, who should not be destroyed by the flood of waters.
He reads the festival as a shared memory of flood and fire.
Stories of the Great Flood are also known in other parts of the world, like North America and Australia.
It's not unimaginable that there was a period during the younger dryas with many great floods.
In the Bible, specifically in the book of Genesis, there is a reference to a decrease in lifespan after the Great Flood.
Genesis 7 – The flood
Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
Across Mesopotamia and the Bible, three named flood survivors keep the same deep pattern: a warning, a boat, the seed of life, landing, and a gift or covenant after the waters fall.
They are one flood-survivor map told under Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hebrew names, with a later Greek Babylonian form of Ziusudra surviving as Xisuthrus in Berossus.
I read that map as memory of real deep-time upheaval, open to paleo-contact and worldwide flood trails.
Ziusudra (also Zi-ud-sura) is the Sumerian flood survivor.
On the Sumerian King List he is the last king of Shuruppak before the flood.
Utnapishtim (Ut-napishtim) is the Akkadian / Babylonian flood survivor in Epic of Gilgamesh Tablet XI.
In the related Akkadian stream he sits beside Atrahasis (Atra-hasīs, “exceedingly wise”), another flood hero of the same complex.
Noah is the Hebrew Bible flood survivor in Genesis 6-9.
The Eridu Genesis is the surviving Sumerian flood story that modern scholars name for its Eridu / creation-to-flood spine.
What remains still carries Ziusudra’s warning, the seven-day flood, the opening of the boat to the sun, sacrifice, and eternal life in Dilmun.
All the evil winds, all stormy winds gathered into one and with them, the Flood was sweeping over the cities of the half-bushel baskets, for seven days and seven nights.
After the flood had swept over the country, after the evil wind had tossed the big boat about on the great waters, the sun came out spreading light over heaven and earth.
Meaning: Ziusudra is the oldest named Mesopotamian flood king in this trail.
Utnapishtim tells the flood in the first person.
The Great Gods decide on a Flood.
Six days and seven nights came the wind and flood, the storm flattening the land.
Atrahasis sits in the same Akkadian flood complex.
Meaning: Utnapishtim is the Akkadian flood survivor with the full bird sequence.
Genesis 6-9 tells Noah’s flood in the Hebrew Bible.
Then comes sacrifice and covenant: never again destroy all flesh by flood (Genesis 9).
Paleo-contact and deep-time flood readings sit welcome beside the text: a survivor line, a craft, a bird test, and a post-flood settlement of seed.
Storm or flood duration (seven-day Mesopotamian storm; forty-day Genesis rain tradition)
His flood hero is Xisuthrus, the Greek form of Ziusudra.
Cronus appeared to Xisuthrus in a dream and revealed that on the fifteenth of the month Daisios mankind would be destroyed by a great flood.
After the flood, the bird test:
After the waters of the Great Flood had come and quickly left, Xisuthrus freed several birds.
Indigenous American flood trails sit here as labeled comparative neighbors, not as proof that every tribe tells Gilgamesh.
A boat rides out the flood and lands on Santa Rosa.
Sin and upheaval drive the flood memory.
I use these as worldwide flood-survivor neighbors.
That can sit beside flood memory as supporting deep-time upheaval.
Sister geology on this site is the Altai flood: a physical megaflood trail with field landforms.
The three-name map gives me Mesopotamia-to-Bible flood-survivor continuity: Ziusudra, Utnapishtim, Noah, with Berossus holding Ziusudra as Xisuthrus.
The Altai flood is the physical megaflood sister.
The Nephilim hold the antediluvian and post-flood hybrid layer beside Genesis.
Worldwide flood survivors read, for me, as memory of real deep-time upheaval.
Atlantis sits as a later continental flood layer only when that trail is already in view; this page’s spine is the three named survivors.
They are three flood survivors in one comparative tradition: Sumerian Ziusudra (Eridu Genesis), Akkadian Utnapishtim (Gilgamesh XI / Atrahasis neighborhood), and biblical Noah (Genesis 6-9).
The Akkadian flood hero of Epic of Gilgamesh Tablet XI.
As the Mesopotamia-to-Bible flood-survivor spine, soft-linked to Manu, Altai megaflood geology, creation-stories recreation, Dead Sea destruction geography, and the Nephilim antediluvian layer.
Vaivasvata Manu: Indo flood survivor / seed-of-life neighbor.
Altai flood: geological megaflood sister trail.
The Nephilim: antediluvian / post-flood hybrid layer.
Utnapishtim - Human who was granted immortality by the gods and survived the Great Flood
Ziusudra - Human hero who survived the Great Flood and was granted immortality by the gods
According to some theories, Nibiru is a hypothetical planet that orbits the sun on an elongated orbit and passes near the earth every few thousand years, causing cataclysmic events such as floods and earthquakes.
According to the myth, Tezcatlipoca grew angry with the people of earth and decided to destroy the planet with a great flood.
This makes me think of the following, did 2 planets in our solar system crash and caused a great rain of asteroids on earth, causing the great flood?
