Bel, the “lord” of the Babylonians, is a name I keep meeting far from Babylon: in Irish May Day fires, in a Scottish word for a bull and in Donnelly’s case for a single sun god carried out of Atlantis. These are the pages where I wrote about him.
The sun god of Babylon
Ignatius Donnelly, on The Kings of Atlantis become the Gods of the Greeks, writes that the Babylonian trinity was made up of Idea, Anu and Bel, that Bel represented the sun and was the favourite god, and that the conical stone was his emblem. On The Bible: Blend and unify ‘the Gods’ into One Marduk, the chief god of Babylon, is the god often called Bel in the Bible, and on Nebo/Nabu, God of Wisdom and Writing in Ancient Mesopotamia Isaiah 46:1 names Nebo alongside Bel in its critique of idolatry. In The Deluge of the Chaldeans Donnelly gives the Chaldean flood account in which Bel proposes the deluge and is filled with anger when he sees the vessel that escaped it.
Bel’s fire in Ireland
Donnelly finds the same god in the west, on The Irish Colonies from Atlantis:
The Irish Druidical rites manifested themselves principally in sun worship. Their chief god was Bel or Baal--the same worshipped by the Phœnicians--the god of the sun.
Ignatius Donnelly, Atlantis: The Antediluvian World

On the same page he notes that the Irish still called the first day of May Lha-Beul-tinne, the day of Bel’s fire.
One god, many names
On The Bronze Age in Europe Donnelly argues that the Phoenicians probably took their god Baal, Bel or El from Atlantis, and that the name surfaces again in the Bel of the Babylonians, the Elohim, the Beelzebub of the Jews and the Allah of the Arabians. On The Oldest Son of Noah he notes that Bel sometimes wore a tiara with bull’s horns, a crown later worn by the Persian kings that became, in time, the symbol of Papal authority, and that the Scottish name Bill for a bull is probably a corruption of Bel.
