Eric Dubay retells a gnostic creation story he says the Roman church drove out after fixing its canon. They teach one perfect God outside the world, and spiritual beings in a higher fullness. Sophia tries to give birth alone and produces a damaged, lion headed craftsman. With helper archons he builds a flawed copy of that world, makes animals, and fails to wake a human body. A hidden spark of light does what he cannot, so people outshine their maker. Jealous, he makes them mortal in an Eden of distractions. Dubay names that maker as the god of the Hebrew scriptures and reads plural creation language as several powers. Humans, he says, were formed so those powers could take the light. A serpent he calls Lucifer tells the truth about the fruit. Dubay’s liberator is that serpent and his jailer is the garden god. Later editors, in this telling, erase the higher God, dress the craftsman in kindness, turn the light bearer into Satan, and blame people for a world already broken. The reading is Dubay’s.
