A narrator’s theory of Dogon and Sirius

Library of the Untold frames Dogon lore about Sirius as a problem of belief, and the chain is the narrator’s theory. A told scene has a child meet a gilled woman from the water while a mother calls her a demon, a sketch of fear closing a door he thinks initiation would open. The Dogon, in this account, drew Sirius and an unseen dense companion, and also spoke of heavy metals, moons, and atoms. He rejects the charge that outsiders planted that astronomy just after the companion was found, pointing to objects he says are older. He then lines water-dwelling teachers with Sumerian fish-like sages, a Babylonian memory that such beings gave the arts and left, and other fish-people tales. Robert Temple’s Sirius book is the source he praises and teases. As he reports the lore, the visitors are people under a higher creator, not gods of creation, and pyramids plus the faint star’s mass are one harmonic signal. This is lore and his joining of it, not a ranking of peoples.

Key points

  • The opening scene is a parable about fearing an amphibious visitor instead of learning from her.
  • The narrator says Dogon initiates mapped Sirius and a heavy companion that the eye cannot see.
  • He treats the charge of recent borrowing as weaker than the age he gives the objects.
  • He connects that lore to Sumerian and Babylonian stories of fish-like culture bringers, following Robert Temple.
  • In the account he gives, those beings are people under a higher creator, and star measures are a signal rather than a hierarchy of nations.
