The trifacial Trinity paintings the church tried to burn

Inspiraggio claims the Council of Trent, from 1545, ordered certain paintings burned as heresies that scared worshippers. The image is Jesus with three faces on one body, called the trifacial Trinity. The channel sketches a sequence: a triangle, three angels, three matching men, a dove for the Spirit, then one head with three faces. It traces that form to Abraham at Mamre, three men who are also one, so Father, Son, and Spirit could share a body, teaching the Nicene belief in one God in three persons. A three headed variant was dropped because beast lore already used many heads. In 1563, on this account, authorities ordered the pictures removed and burned. Some painters hid the side faces under hair. A Gregorio Vasquez canvas in Bogota is said to have revealed three faces when that paint came off. Most survivors are unsigned, which the video reads as fear, and one anonymous Netherlandish panel near 1500 uses the Salvator Mundi pose. The claim is that censorship buried this iconography, not that a secret vault still holds one canvas.

Key points

  • The channel says Trent condemned three faced images of Jesus as heresy and ordered them burned.
  • It traces the type from geometric signs and angels to one head with three faces.
  • Abraham’s three visitors at Mamre are offered as the biblical seed of the picture.
  • A three headed variant was abandoned because it looked like monsters in beast lore.
  • Some painters, including Gregorio Vasquez, are said to have hidden the extra faces under hair.
  • Unsigned panels in remote churches are treated as evidence that artists feared punishment.
