The Waldensians were one of the oldest and most enduring dissenting movements in medieval Europe.
Founded in the late 12th century (around 1173) in Lyon, France, by a wealthy merchant named Peter Waldo (Valdes). He gave away his possessions and began preaching a life of radical poverty, simplicity, and direct access to the Bible in the vernacular (the local language, not just Latin).
Core beliefs that got them labeled heretical:
- Rejection of many Catholic practices (purgatory, indulgences, some sacraments, veneration of saints, etc.).
- Emphasis on lay preaching — anyone (including women in some communities) could preach if they lived a holy life.
- Belief that the true Church should be poor and apostolic, not wealthy and hierarchical.
Declared heretical by the Catholic Church in 1184. They faced centuries of persecution, forced conversions, and massacres.
By the 15th century they had spread into the Alps, parts of Germany, and Central Europe, including Bohemia and Moravia. Some communities survived underground or in remote areas.
During the Reformation era (16th century), many Waldensians aligned with Protestant ideas (especially Calvinism).
They were seen by the Church as a dangerous threat because they challenged papal authority and offered an alternative model of Christian life.
